Escape on the Edge

MASAMI NANJO

ABOUT MASAMI NANJO

Masami Nanjo was born in Saitama, Japan.
Her works characteristically feature a dazzling array of colors.
"What is this!?" you think, as you cannot quite shake the afterimage from your mind. If you look very carefully, you notice people, and parts of people, drawn with a unique form. And that form, whether Nanjo intends it or not, is both disgusting and cute.
Her works make you pay attention to certain aspects of everyday life, or things which are so small you have not noticed them before. It has the effect of relieving some of the stress of people who go about their everyday life with tensed shoulders. That must be because art has been a part of Nanjo's life since she was very young. She had always drawn pictures, but discovered her touch for painting in elementary school and began to concentrate seriously on art. The experience of having her art praised at school—the largest community a student is part of—and of having others look at and enjoy her art made Nanjo keenly interested in the outside world and gave her wings.
Nanjo calls her own artistic touch her "wings".
By giving a piece of work wings, that work can fly to reach the whole world.
Nanjo has focused purely on her painting since a very young age, and her works—stunningly bright and free of worry—have developed along side her as she grew to adulthood. Now, her works are ready to fly.

STATEMENT

1 The purpose of the work, incentive for creation, and development process

The purpose of the work is to present the viewer with feelings of cheerfulness, courage and power.
Life is not full of fun things, there are many disappointments as well.
I hope to put those feelings into my art and, accompanied with occasional nods of agreement, bring vigor to those who view my art.
I am putting my true feelings directly onto the canvas so I believe I can portray this very moment and time that I am living in.

2 The conceetual foundation of your work
I mainly draw with self-portraits as the main theme.
Why self-portraits? Because I see myself every day.
My facial expressions change with my physical and emotional condition.
I draw those changes along with my desires.
My dream is to fly all around the world, so the line-like touches on the drawing represent the wings of a bird.

3 The development process
I often get the urge to draw when I cannot do something, I want to do something, or I want to become someone who can do something.
Sometimes it comes in a flash, but other times I struggle to find an outlet for my feelings; I put these onto paper.
