SUE

Sue
Sue

ABOUT SUE

Sue was born in 1980 in Kanagawa.
It appeared that Sue had a special awareness since early childhood.
This was mostly because of Sue's neutral appearance, or an identity as an X gender.
Since birth, Sue was different to others, but for Sue, this may have been part of a process to gaining a self identity.
Due to this, during childhood Sue would be called 'strange' by others, and live a difficult life, and at one point even choose to live in seclusion.
During this time, Sue focused on painting techniques and realism, but would gradually gain a place where it would be possible to live as Sue's 'strange' self.
After finishing high school Sue went on to enter Tamabi Art University.
However, here Sue sealed her style of painting, and the fact that Sue was painting abstract art may be an indication that even the university life style didn't suit Sue.
After graduating, going back to Sue's neutrality and the gap differences that arose from that, Sue composed the two components of the gap difference into one image, which has lead to today's literary style, a presentation style which Sue called Hybrid Realism, and splendidly lets Sue express oneself in a painting.
From now one, Sue's self expression will continue to change, and we can expect to see more of Sue's inner reformation.

STATEMENT

Sue is a female name.

I have my reasons for naming myself that.
As you can see, I am a male, but I do not like manliness. Rather, I like an androgynous look and fashion.
It is my biased sense of beauty that I believe that the ultimate form of beauty is not in a vigorous and fearless male grace, nor is it in a supple and voluptuous female attractiveness, but a deft combination of both. And it is in this middle ground where I believe that the name Sue exists.

Whether through good or ill fortune, I have had many peculiar life experiences, and through living through a repeated cycle of variances unlike anyone else's, the common thread which links many of the things which interest me is that they are, "strange." And that is the word that, throughout my life since I was a child to my current state of progress, I have always heard the most by people when they describe me.

"Strange" is, at school, and in society, not thought of as a complementary word. But in the world of art, strangeness can conversely be an attribute, a thing that can be made good use of.
The reason for my involvement in art lies in this attribute.

And as I began to find an interest in strange things, I found myself further intrigued by things which were represented by "gaps."

For example, someone with a child-like face but with a bulky and muscular body; a boy with a girl's face; a child who appears to enjoy playing outdoors but actually likes to be indoors reading manga and playing games; someone who appears to be cool and chic but would ride cross-country through Japan on a bicycle, etc.
I based the concepts of my artwork on my interest in such gaps, and that is how my technique of "hybrid realism" was born.

This technique involves a painting style that, while based on a central axis of realism, is born from the gap between the real and the rough in human figures and backgrounds.
This involves not only the gaps in form, but also in pigment thickness and materials, as well as gaps in motifs(unisexualization = a muscular female, for example). This is a technique whereby I fuse together disparate elements while consolidating them into a harmonized world view.
