Escape on the Edge

DAISUKE FUNAKI

ABOUT DAISUKE FUNAKI

Daisuke Fuanki's small size sculptures attract the viewer because of the combination of beauty and violence they display.
They are strong yet fragile. They show amazing realistic details, some of which are not obvious at first glance.
They comment on socioeconomic and political trends so they provoke your thoughts.

When I saw the works at first during the "GEISAI" fair in Tokyo, I thought it was one of the outstanding booths, and immediately bought a piece.
Since then I got a few more, and I could recommend his works to other collectors in the Netherlands as well.

STATEMENT

When I work on my art, I attach most importance to negative and dark aspects of the world.
That is essential to express the highest values of art such as contemporaneousness and on-the-spotness as well as to keep my identity as an artist without depending on the themes and materials of each artwork.
I have often expressed sarcastic thoughts about the dark corners of our lives, daily phenomena, and trends.

In today's diverse and fast-moving environment, I think the most important thing for art, especially contemporary art is to reflect what is currently happening in the real world.
While the emerging dominance of internet media is visible everywhere, it is quite often the case that the information delivered by the media cannot have lasting impression on people.
That may because of the erosion of print media, or because the world is too diverse and moving too fast.
However, there is some information that can be gained only from images and movies on the internet media.
For example, in the series of revolutions in the Middle East in 2010 and 2011, which was called "Twitter/Facebook Revolution", those media brought the misery vividly to Japan.
I believe that art also works as one of the diversified media.
There must be some information that can be conveyed only in the form of art.
Art can move people, define an era, and alter the course of history.
All those challenges are something that I want to call "art".
